About FlockCalc
FlockCalc is a small, free collection of calculators for backyard poultry keepers — the quick flock maths you would otherwise do on the back of a feed bag.
What the site does
Planning a flock means answering the same handful of questions over and over: how much space, how many birds, what will the eggs cost. Each calculator here answers one of those questions in seconds:
- Quail Coop Size Calculator — How much floor space Coturnix quail need, which cage sizes fit your covey, and how many quail fit in the cage you already have.
- How Many Chickens Do I Need? — Tell us how many eggs your household eats and we work out how many laying hens you need — plus a buffer hen for moulting season.
- Cost Per Egg Calculator — What a home-raised egg actually costs once feed is counted — per egg, per dozen, and compared with the store price.
- Duck Coop Size Calculator — Coop and run space for ducks by breed size, nesting boxes, and the duck-specific details (no roosts, splash zones) chickens don't need.
- Chicken Coop Size Calculator — Coop and run size for bantam, standard and large breeds, roost length, nesting boxes and ready-made coop footprints.
- Egg Production Calculator — Eggs per week, month and year from your hen count and laying rate — in eggs and dozens.
- Chicken Feed Calculator — Daily, weekly and monthly feed for chicks, growers and layers, with bags per month and cost.
- How Many Quail Do I Need? — Work backwards from the quail eggs you want each week to the hens — and the cage — you need.
- Chicken Run Size Calculator — Total run area for your flock, plus ready-to-build dimensions and fencing length.
- Hatch Date Calculator — Set eggs today and get the hatch date, lockdown day and candling milestone for five species.
- Nesting Box & Roost Calculator — Nesting boxes at one per four hens and total roost length at 10 inches per bird.
- How Many Ducks Do I Need? — Work backwards from the duck eggs you want each week to the ducks, coop and run you need.
- Quail Feed Calculator — Daily and monthly feed for quail chicks and adults in grams and pounds, with bag counts and cost.
- Brooder Size Calculator — Brooder floor space week by week for chicken and quail chicks, plus the heat-lamp schedule.
There are no accounts, no ads walls and no tracking forms. Every calculator runs entirely in your browser — the numbers you type never leave your device.
How the figures are sourced
We use the space allowances and feed figures published by university extension services and poultry organisations — the guidance written for backyard keepers, not factory minimums. Where sources give a range (and they often do), the calculators show the range and label the comfortable option honestly rather than quietly using the smallest number. Each tool page explains the exact figures it uses, in its “How it works” section.
These calculators are planning tools. Local rules on keeping poultry vary, and animal needs vary too — use the numbers as a well-sourced starting point, and give your birds more space whenever you can.
